Windows 7 update error codes. Updates

Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid Error 643 keys is not recommended unless you are a PC service professional. Mistakes made when editing the registry can render your PC inoperable and cause irreparable damage to your operating system. In fact, even one comma placed in the wrong place can prevent your computer from booting!

Because of this risk, we highly recommend using a trusted registry cleaner such as WinThruster [Download] (developed by Microsoft Gold Certified Partner) to scan and repair any Error 643-related issues. Using Registry Cleaner [Download] can automate the process of finding corrupted registry entries, missing file references (such as those causing the %%error_name% error), and broken links within the registry. Before each scan, a backup copy is automatically created, allowing you to undo any changes with one click and protecting you from possible damage to your computer. The best part is that fixing registry errors [Download] can dramatically improve system speed and performance.

Warning: Unless you are an experienced PC user, we DO NOT recommend manually editing the Windows Registry. Using Registry Editor incorrectly may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from incorrect use of Registry Editor can be corrected. You use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Before you manually repair the Windows registry, you need to create a backup by exporting the portion of the registry associated with Error 643 (for example, Windows Update):

  1. Click on the button Begin.
  2. Enter " command" V search bar... DON'T CLICK YET ENTER!
  3. While holding down the keys CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, press ENTER.
  4. A dialog box for access will be displayed.
  5. Click Yes.
  6. The black box opens with a blinking cursor.
  7. Enter " regedit" and press ENTER.
  8. In the Registry Editor, select the Error 643-related key (for example, Windows Update) that you want to back up.
  9. On the menu File select Export.
  10. On the list Save to Select the folder where you want to save the Windows Update key backup.
  11. In field File name Enter a name for the backup file, for example "Windows Update backup".
  12. Make sure the field Export range value selected Selected branch.
  13. Click Save.
  14. The file will be saved with extension .reg.
  15. You now have a backup of your Windows Update-related registry entry.

The following steps for manually editing the registry will not be described in this article, as they are likely to damage your system. If you would like more information about editing the registry manually, please check out the links below.

Error code 12 occurs if an already expired or blocked (due to renewal, replacement, split or merger) license is indicated as the current license in the Dr.Web License Manager.

Follow these steps:

  • Register a new license in the Dr.Web license manager.
  • Remove the expired (or blocked) license from the Dr.Web license manager. Only one valid license should remain in the list of licenses.

What does error code 9 mean when updating?

If your Internet connection is organized through a proxy server, this error code may appear if the proxy server parameters are not specified in the antivirus settings. To correct the situation, right-click on the Dr.Web anti-virus agent icon in the lower right corner of the screen, in the menu select the lock (Administrative mode) - gear (Settings) - General - Network - Use proxy server (specify proxy parameters). Try updating.

If this is not the case, a third-party firewall may be blocking the connection. In this case, try temporarily disabling the third-party firewall, if installed, and try updating.

If in this case the updates are not resumed, it means that access to the Dr.Web update servers is blocked by a malicious program that has penetrated your PC. Create a written support request (a phone call will not help!) and wait for instructions from a specialist.

The procedure for installing system updates in Windows 10 may fail, causing the process to freeze or terminate. Sometimes, along with the premature completion of an operation, an error appears, which can be eliminated by focusing on its unique number. If you cannot cope with the problem in this way, then you can use standard instructions.

What to do if the update gets stuck in a loop

An update at a certain stage of installation may encounter an error that will lead to the interruption of the process. The computer will reboot, and not fully installed files will be rolled back. If system auto-update is not deactivated on the device, the process will start again, but the error will appear again for the same reason as the first time. The computer will interrupt the process, reboot, and then proceed to update again.

Windows 10 update may freeze and take forever

Also, endless updating can occur without logging in. The computer will reboot, preventing you from logging into your account and doing anything with the system settings.

Below are two methods that will help solve the problem: the first is for those who have the ability to log in, the second is for those whose computer restarts without logging in.

Removing empty accounts

The update process can become endless if the system files contain accounts that remain from previous versions of the operating system or were deleted incorrectly. You can get rid of them by following these steps:

Installing updates from third-party media

This method is suitable for those who do not have access to the system, and for those for whom deleting empty accounts did not help. You will need another work computer with Internet access and a flash drive of at least 4 GB.

Installing updates using third-party media involves creating installation media with the latest version of Windows 10. Updates will be received using this media. User data will not be affected.

  1. If you upgraded to Windows 10 using a flash drive or manually burned disc, the steps below will be familiar to you. Before you start recording the image, you need to find a flash drive that has at least 4 GB of memory and is formatted in FAT. Insert it into the port of a computer that has Internet access, go to “Explorer,” right-click on it and select the “Format” function. In the “File system” item, specify “FAT32”. It is necessary to perform these manipulations, even if the flash drive is empty and formatted earlier, otherwise it will cause additional problems during the update.

Format the flash drive to FAT32

  2. On the same computer, open the Microsoft website, find the page where you can download Windows 10, and download the installer.

    Download the Windows 10 installer

  3. Open the downloaded file and go through the first steps with accepting the license agreement and other initial settings. Please note that at the step of selecting the bitness and version of Windows 10, you must specify exactly those system parameters that are used on the computer with the stuck update.

Select the version of Windows 10 you want to burn to the USB flash drive

  4. When the program asks what you want to do, select the option that allows you to create media for installing the system on another device, and complete the procedure for creating an installation flash drive.

Indicate that you want to create a flash drive

  5. Transfer the flash drive to the computer that needs to be updated manually. It should be turned off at this point. Turn on the computer, enter the BIOS (press F2 or Del while turning on) and rearrange the drives in the Boot menu so that your flash drive is first in the list. If you do not have BIOS, but its new version - UEFI - the first place should be the name of the flash drive with the UEFI prefix.

Place the flash drive first in the list of drives

  6. Save the changed settings and exit the BIOS. The device will continue to turn on, after which the system installation will begin. Go through the first steps, and when the program asks you to select an action, indicate that you want to update this computer. Wait until the updates are installed; the procedure will not affect your files.

What to do if the update is interrupted

The update process may end prematurely at one of the stages: while checking files, receiving updates, or installing them. There are often cases when the procedure ends at certain percentages: 30%, 99%, 42%, etc.

Firstly, you need to take into account that the normal installation time for updates is up to 12 hours. The time depends on the weight of the update and the performance of the computer. So it might be worth waiting a bit and then trying to solve the problem.

Secondly, if more than the specified time has passed, then the reasons for the unsuccessful installation may be the following:

  • There are unnecessary devices connected to the computer. Disconnect everything you can from it: headphones, flash drives, disks, USB adapters, etc.;
  • A third-party antivirus is preventing the update. Remove it during the procedure, and then install it again or replace it with a new one;
  • updates arrive on your computer incorrectly or with errors. This is possible if the Update Center is damaged or the Internet connection is unstable. Check your Internet connection, if you are sure of it, then use the following instructions for restoring the Update Center.

Restoring the "Update Center"

There is a possibility that the Update Center was damaged by viruses or user actions. To restore it, just restart and clear the processes associated with it. But before you do this, you need to delete the already downloaded updates, as they may be damaged.

Now you can proceed to restoring the Update Center:

  1. Open any text editor, such as Word or Notepad.
  2. Paste the code into it:
    • @ECHO OFF echo Reset Windows Update echo. PAUSE echo. attrib -h -r -s %windir%\system32\catroot2 attrib -h -r -s %windir%\system32\catroot2\*.* net stop wuauserv net stop CryptSvc net stop BITS ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2 .old ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\application data\Microsoft\Network\downloader" downloader.old net Start BITS net start CryptSvc net start wuauserv echo. echo Ready echo. PAUSE.
  3. Save the resulting file anywhere in bat format.

Save the file in bat format

  4. Run the saved file with administrator rights.

Open the saved file as administrator

  5. The “Command Prompt” will open, which will execute all commands automatically. After the procedure is completed, Update Center will be restored. Try restarting the update process and check if it is stable.

Update Center settings are reset automatically

Alternative update

If updates through the Update Center are not downloaded and installed correctly, you can use other methods to obtain new versions of the system.

  1. Use the option from the “Install updates from third-party media” item.
  2. Download the program from Microsoft, which can be accessed on the same page where you can download the Windows installation tool. The download link appears if you are logged into the site from a computer that already has Windows 10 installed.

Download the Windows 10 Updates program

  3. After launching the program, click the “Update Now” button.

Click on the “Update Now” button

  4. Updates can be downloaded individually from the same Microsoft website. It is recommended to download the Anniversary Updates as they are more stable builds.

Download the required updates from the Microsoft website individually

After successful installation of updates, it is better to deactivate system auto-update, otherwise the problem with their installation may recur. It is not recommended to completely abandon new versions, but if downloading them through the “Update Center” leads to errors, then it is better to use not this method, but any other one described above.

Troubleshooting codes

If the process is interrupted and an error with some code appears on the screen, then you need to focus on this number and look for a solution specifically for it. All possible errors, reasons for their occurrence and ways to eliminate them are listed below.

Code 0x800705b4

This error appears in the following cases:

  • the Internet connection was interrupted while downloading updates, or the DNS service, which is partially responsible for connecting to the network, did not work correctly;
  • graphics adapter drivers have not been updated or installed;
  • Update Center needs to be restarted and settings changed.

Changing Update Center settings

  1. By going to the Update Center settings, which are located in the Settings program, in the Update and Security section, expand additional information.

Click on the “Advanced settings” button

  2. Disable downloading updates for non-system products, restart the device and start updating.

Disable receiving updates for other Windows components

  3. If the previous changes made did not eliminate the error, then launch Command Prompt using administrator rights and run these commands in it:
  4. Restart the device again and update.

Code 0x80248007

This error occurs due to problems with the Update Center, which can be resolved by restarting the service and clearing its cache:

  1. Open the Services program.

    Open the Services app

  2. Stop the service responsible for Update Center.

    Stop the Windows Update service

  3. Launch “Explorer” and use it to follow the path: “Local disk (C:)” - “Windows” - “SoftwareDistribution”. In the last folder, clear the contents of two subfolders: “Download” and “DataStore”. Please note that you cannot delete the subfolders themselves; you only need to erase the folders and files located in them.

Clear the contents of the “Download” and “DataStore” subfolders

  4. Return to the list of services and launch Update Center, then go to it and try updating again.

Turn on the Update Center service

Troubleshooting using a third-party program

Microsoft distributes special programs to automatically fix errors associated with standard Windows processes and applications. The programs are called Easy Fix and work separately with each type of system problem.

Code 0x80070422

The error appears because the Update Center is not working. To enable it, open the Services program, find the Windows Update service in the general list and open it by double-clicking the left mouse button. In the window that opens, click on the “Run” button, and in the startup type set the “Automatic” option so that when you restart the computer you do not have to start the service again.

Start the service and set the startup type to “Automatic”

Code 0x800706d9

To get rid of this error, just activate the built-in Windows Firewall. Launch the Services application, find the Windows Firewall service in the general list and open its properties. Click on the “Run” button and set the startup type to “Automatic” so that when you restart the computer you do not have to manually turn it on again.

Start the Windows Firewall service

Code 0x80070570

This error may occur due to malfunction of the hard drive, the media from which updates are installed, or RAM. Each of the components must be checked separately, it is recommended to replace or overwrite the installation media, and scan the hard drive through the Command Prompt by running the chkdsk c: /r command.

Scan your hard drive with chkdsk c: /r

Code 0x8007001f

You can see such an error if the installed drivers obtained through the Update Center are intended only for previous versions of the operating system. This happens when the user has switched to a new OS, and the company whose device he is using has not released the necessary drivers. In this case, it is recommended to go to the company’s website and check their availability manually.

Code 0x8007000d, 0x80004005

These errors occur due to problems with the Update Center. Due to its incorrect operation, it does not download updates correctly and they become broken. To get rid of this problem, you can fix the Update Center using the instructions above from the sections “Restoring the Update Center”, “Setting up the Update Center” and “Troubleshooting using a third-party program”. The second option is that you don’t have to use the “Update Center”, instead updating your computer using the methods described in the above instructions “Installing updates from third-party media” and “Alternative update”.

Code 0x8007045b

This error can be resolved by running two commands in turn in the “Command Prompt” running with administrator rights:

It is also worth checking whether there are any unnecessary accounts in the registry - this option is described in the paragraph “Deleting empty accounts”.

Code 80240fff

Check your computer for viruses. In the Command Prompt, run an automatic scan of system files for errors using the sfc /scannow command. If errors are found, but the system cannot solve them, then follow the commands described in the instructions for error code 0x8007045b.

Delete all system files

Code 0x80070017

To resolve this error, you need to run Command Prompt as an administrator and enter the following commands one by one:

  • net stop wuauserv;
  • CD %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution;
  • Ren Download Download.old;
  • net start wuauserv.

Update Center will restart and its settings will be reset to default values.

Code 0x80070643

During the execution of the above programs, some services are stopped, certain folders are cleaned and renamed, and then previously disabled services are started.

What to do if the error does not disappear or an error with a different code appears

If you did not find an error with the required code among the instructions described above, or the options suggested above did not help eliminate the error, then use the following universal methods:

  1. The first thing to do is reset the Update Center settings. How to do this is described in the paragraphs “Code 0x80070017”, “Restoring the Update Center”, “Configuring the Update Center”, “Troubleshooting using a third-party program”, “Code 0x8007045b” and “Code 0x80248007”.
  2. The next step is scanning the hard drive, it is described in paragraphs “Code 0x80240fff” and “Code 0x80070570”.
  3. If the update is performed from third-party media, then replace the image used, the program for recording the image, and, if these changes do not help, the media itself.
  4. If you use the standard method of installing updates through the “Update Center” and it does not work, then use other options for obtaining updates described in the paragraphs “Installing updates from third-party media” and “Alternative updates”.
  5. The last option, which should be used only if you are sure that the previous methods are useless, is to roll back the system to a restore point. If it is not there, or it was updated after problems with installing updates arose, then reset to standard settings, or better yet, reinstall the system.
  6. If reinstallation does not help, then the problem lies in the computer components, most likely in the hard drive, although other options cannot be ruled out. Before replacing parts, try reconnecting them, cleaning the ports, and testing how they will interact with another computer.

Video: Troubleshooting errors when updating Windows 10

Installing updates may turn into an endless process or be interrupted with an error. You can fix the problem yourself by setting up the Update Center, downloading updates in another way, rolling back the system, or, as a last resort, replacing computer components.

Good afternoon!. This is why I love Microsoft software products, for their modernity, convenience, functionality and for the huge number of bugs, errors and glitches that various platforms and software products of the Redmond giant provide us with. Today we will talk about one more common error 0x80073701, which I have encountered in different editions of the OS, from Windows 7 and 10 to server platforms, for example, when installing the Russian language in Windows Server 2016. Let me try to describe to you the algorithm of actions that will help fix this problem.

Variants of error 0x80073701

Before we solve this error, I would like to highlight in what situations it occurs, since it is inherent in all Windows platforms.

wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

wuauclt.exe /detectnow

After which we try to install the update or role you need again, error 0x80073701 should disappear.

If cleaning the folders with downloaded updates did not help you, then there is a possibility that your operating system system files are damaged. To check for damage, you need to use the sfc command line utility, as in the article about error 0x800705b4. Open the command line and write the command:

It is ideal to run it in Windows safe mode, as there may be problems that the utility cannot fix. If the sfc utility does not help you and you need to analyze the errors in it in more detail, then try using the Deployment Image and Service Management (DISM) utility.

DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH

Important! When you run this command, DISM contacts Windows Update to retrieve files to repair damage. But if the Windows Update client is damaged, use a running instance of Windows as the recovery source, or a parallel Windows folder from a network location or removable media, such as a Windows DVD, as the file source. To do this, enter the following command on the command line:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source: C:\your distribution path\Windows/LimitAccess

After that, we reboot and try to run sfc /scannow. If this command does not help, then try re-registering the wups2.dll library.

  • net stop wuauserv (Stop the Windows 10 update service).
  • regsvr32 %WinDir%\Sistem32\wups2.dll.
  • net start wuauserv (Start the Windows 10 update service)

Let's try running sfc /scannow again. Damaged files should be replaced with functional ones and error 0x80073701 should disappear.

Installing a monthly rollup

In some cases, for example, with the installation of a language pack or server roles, error 0x80073701 can be fixed by installing a stand-alone, cumulative update for example for Windows 8.1, KB4103724. To install KB4103724 you need to download it from the Microsoft catalog (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx). I would like to note that the name of KB is constantly changing, as newer versions are released and you need to download the current one. For example, for 8.1 there is an official page with versions of the KB trial monthly cumulative package (https://support.microsoft.com/ru-ru/help/4103724), for other versions of the OS, the links are as follows:

  • Windows 7 - https://support.microsoft.com/ru-ru/help/4009469
  • Windows 10 - https://support.microsoft.com/ru-ru/help/4103714

Next, knowing the required KB number, open the Microsoft Update catalog, a link to it is in the package description, at the very bottom. In the search bar, enter the number of the required KB package. Click download for the desired package. Next, we install it and reboot your computer, and check for error 0x80073701.

Error 0x80073701 when installing the server role

In the Windows Server operating system, when you try to install the server role, you can also receive the code 0x80073701, this is most often associated with a problem in the WinSxS folder. This folder also contains downloaded Windows updates; they are stored there so that you can, for example, delete the Service Pack or KBs you need, or restore them. They may also be damaged in the WinSxS folder. You can try to delete old ones, for example, those that are more than 30 days old, using the command:

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

If that doesn’t work, try mounting the installation disk in the desired operating system, and when you need to click the “Install” button, click the “Specify an alternative path” link

And in the alternative path, specify the path to the SXS folder on your mounted disk, for me it looks like this: D:\sources\sxs

I hope these methods can help you fix the problem with code 0x80073701, if you have any questions, write them in the comments.

Ensuring maximum security is only possible in new versions of the system; at least it’s worth upgrading the existing Windows, but during the upgrade process it often appears error 80070103. Using Windows 7 is still a popular trend because of its classic and familiar design. A number of users who want to update the “seven” are faced with problems and errors of various origins and manifestations, including code 80070103. The problems are related to conflicts in the new drivers.

Update error 80070103: reasons for occurrence

80070103 Windows 7 appears when you update not the system itself, but additional components. Previously, the Update Center analyzes the entire system configuration and determines the presence of violations and malfunctions in the physical and software environment.

Based on our own observations and user reviews, it is clear that the scanner often does not work correctly, so it does not notice updated drivers, trying to install new ones on top of the previous ones. At the same time, installing modern drivers is an important condition for the functionality of the entire system and the possibility of updating it. It is important to ensure that drivers are detected and updated correctly.

To solve the conflict problem, you need to restart the Windows scanner; there is a chance that it will start working properly.

Code 80070103 - Center restart

80070103 Windows 7 update error is resolved in half of the cases by simply restarting the system tool called Update Center.

The technique involves performing:

  1. Click on the Start element.
  2. Expand the “All Programs” category, the button is located at the bottom of the panel that opens.

  1. Next, open the directory called “Standard”.

  1. Among all the elements you need to find “Console” or “Command Line”.
  2. Right-click to expand the file options and run with administrator rights.
  3. Now use the command net stop wuauserv and confirm with the Enter key. It is expected that the Update Center will be forced to stop.

  1. You should re-run the tool using net start wuauserv and Enter.

  1. You can close the window and try the update algorithm again.

If the manipulation does not bring results, you will have to change the settings of the tool itself to upgrade the system.

Error code 80070103 – Driver update prevented

Windows error code 80070103 is the result of incorrect driver upgrades in almost 100% of cases. The way out is to disable the automatic update function for this software. Windows will remain inactive in the driver field and the user will have to manually perform manipulations in the future. Such an action with minimal risk for the PC will allow you to receive the latest versions of the software.

To disable the driver analysis and loading function:

  1. Click on Start.
  2. Set applications to display in All Programs mode.
  3. You should go to the “Settings” section.
  4. Select "Update Center" or use the search.
  5. Go to the “Important updates” category by clicking on the corresponding button.

  1. Among the entire list, you need to find elements that are drivers and hide them using the right button.

You can find drivers based on their names; the most important ones are video drivers and sound software. The most popular manufacturers, and therefore the names in the list of video adapters, are GeForce and Radeon. Mostly sound drivers are Realtek.

From this moment on, the modernization of the listed elements is carried out exclusively independently, this will help prevent the occurrence of failures and errors.

Additional methods

For users who were unable to fix the problem using the methods listed above, you can add something:

  • A simple restart of the computer can fix the problem.
  • use the special Microsoft Fix It utility; the developer offers a free program for analyzing and fixing problems in the system.

  • system scanning with the sfc /scannow tool - this entry is entered into the console, where the algorithm for checking and solving problems will start.

  • you should restore the registry and remove temporary, useless and harmful files from the system using CCleaner. The intuitively obvious interface will not mislead you when using it.
  • Viral activity affects all areas of PC functioning, including system tools. It is worth checking the system with Dr. antivirus scanners. Web, Kaspersky, etc.

  • updating the system from the installation disk helps to fix almost all problems.
  • Downloading new versions can occur in safe mode, you just need to select to launch drivers for working with the network.

Any of the above will clearly help; accordingly, the user will be able to eliminate the annoying error on his own and save on diagnostics at a service center.
