What it is? Essentially this is a gluing together of two global mods: Call of Chernobyl(best mod of 2015 according to Moddb) and Misery(best mod of 2013 according to Moddb). The first is the skeleton of locations and quests, the second is the skin of the gameplay and graphics. But how does it all work and why should I give up on the bomb mop and go back to playing the boring Call of Pripyat?

Locations. Call of Misery (hereinafter simply CoM) consists of more than 30 locations from the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy. plus two new ones. All locations are populated by factions and mutants according to logic and lore. On Agroprma you can find Sidorovich bartering at exorbitant prices, bandits are based at ATP, Debt covers the bar, Army Warehouses are in the power of Freedom, Pripyat under the Monolith, the Syndicate guards the entrance to Limansk, on Yantar there is an eternal skirmish between scientists and zombies, and Clear Sky lurks in the depths of the swamps . Members of factions do not hesitate to visit neighboring ones, but do not go far from the bases. Often there is a shootout for the same pig farm and it is either the bandits or the stalkers. The checkpoint at army warehouses goes from mercenaries to the monolith and back, depending on who is more numerous at the moment. Or maybe a chimera will come running and eat everyone the hell up. The zone lives, the zone moves.

Groups. Have you ever dreamed of wandering around the Zone as a Syndicate, fulfilling orders? Or maybe test tubes and white coats are your passion? Or was it always your goal to shout “Mom is not the law. I am the law” while sitting on the bandits’ parachute? So, now all this is possible. All 9 factions of the trilogy are available in CoM, each with its own unique base, equipment and quests. The player has the right to choose a name, avatar and starting location, and then the Zone will decide how to proceed. Also, each faction has both friends and enemies. As a long-time traveler, don't expect a warm welcome at the Warehouses. Bandits will be killed by almost everyone, except mercenaries and freedom. Fanatics are purging everyone who is an enemy of the Monolith.

Quests. Each faction has its own special set of quests. This isn't an RPG, so don't expect a ton of text with answer options. Everything is in the logic of the original Stalker - kill and fetch. But each faction plays it out differently. The Svoboda people have a duty to kill a traitor, the bandits ask to cover up the nonsense, the mercenaries just have an order. More peaceful factions offer to carry mutant parts or household items for them. Sometimes you come across quests for reconnaissance, interception, escort, rescue of a hostage, search for weapons, security or delivery of important documents. Quests are given by both ordinary merchants and squad leaders. If you are tired of the group’s tasks, nothing prevents you from going to inquire about the work of the allied factions.
In addition to the regular backlash from the group’s bosses, there is also a story quest. Every game it is new and generated anew. No two playthroughs can be the same. This is where the most interesting research and search tasks occur. For those who are not satisfied with this, they can talk to a strange man in a cloak in the Swamps and the third line of story quests will become available.

Freeplay. So you have chosen a group, a location and received your starting equipment. What's next? Whatever you want. The area is at your complete disposal. You can immediately rush to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, for a Klondike of artifacts, and grab it from the first bandit, because a beginner’s jacket, an AKS and 1000 rubles in your pocket are not good equipment. You can make money by hunting mutants, you can make money by collecting artifacts, you can focus on completing quests, or you can do everything at once. You choose the goals of the game yourself. Become a legend, turn off the burner, buy exu and pump it to the top, destroy all factions, go through the story, etc.

Atmosphere. Since it’s 2016, no one needs games without graphics. The authors took care of this and added a lot of graphic, weather, texture and sound mods. Everything looks amazing. What can I tell you, see for yourself.




Hardcore. The original goal of the Misery modification, in addition to gameplay and graphics, was to complicate the game without losing interest. And the authors succeeded. First aid kits heal slowly and are expensive, most of the weapons are in poor condition, there is an eternal shortage of ammunition and hunger, and goods in the store cost a lot of money. You literally have to survive in the Zone. All this was also transferred to CoM. But let's take a closer look at the difficulty of the game.

NPCs and AI. Both you and the NPC are extremely vulnerable to lead. GG is enough for a couple of small-caliber bullets, as well as for humanoid enemies. If in the case of who will kill whom first, handiness on your part decides, then for enemies it is rank and faction. If novice stalkers don’t hit you with a rifle at 50 meters, then the Monoliths or warriors already at 200 meters begin to actively crush you with fire, seasoning it all with grenades and constant movement. Shootouts have become more interesting and dynamic.

Monsters. Now they are more dangerous than ever. Half of them will one-shot you, and the second won’t go below three and also quickly reduces your health bar to zero. All creatures move silently, forcing the player to constantly monitor the situation at 360 degrees. But if the stalker is well equipped and knows the tactics of killing the monster, its weaknesses and strengths, then even a chimera can be killed with a knife. If you don't have the necessary protection, then run. Maybe you'll be lucky.

Hunting. Or not. After all, you just went into battle against dogs to get food. Yes, now you can kill monsters not only for profit, but also for food. CoM implements a system for preparing food from monster meat. If you have a portable stove or multicooker and fuel for them, then the problems of hunger will no longer be the worst. Just know, add coal. However, nothing comes for free. Meat cooked even in the best oven wastes money, and fuel takes up precious inventory space. Therefore, you will have to choose - health or money.
Also, in addition to meat and parts of mutants, skins can also fall from living creatures, which you can either sell or hang on your loved one, receiving bonuses to protection.
In addition, a special hunter's kit will help simplify the hunt, which increases the chances of dropping parts. You will have to pay for it in weight - 6 kg is very heavy.



Bonfires. So you had a great hunt, collected a bunch of tender meat, shot the bandits and generally worked hard on this game day. Need rest. Where is the best place to relax if not by the fire? The undead will not let you lie. Moreover, fires are now the only way to save. Yes, yes, Dark Souls has come here too. To ignite, you only need matches, of which there are always plenty. But don't be alarmed. Fired saves are only an option and can be disabled in the game settings menu. Sometimes hardcore can be too much.

Daytime radiation. In addition to the living creatures running around the Zone, nature itself will be against you. I think many have played the Metro 2033 series and know that going to the surface without a gas mask is deadly. A similar system is implemented here. To move freely around locations, you need clothes in good condition and a gas mask. If any of your equipment is damaged in a battle against monsters or a shootout, you will begin to be exposed to radiation. Various medicines, shelters with a roof (house, barn) or the time of day - from 21.00 to 6.00 there is no noise on the street can help you with this. Yes, unrealistic, but interesting.

Emissions and Psi. This all migrated from the original Call of Pripyat. We hear a siren and hide in a shelter. If there is a release, then those who did not hide will become zombies if the Psi die. Repair system. So you are in a barn, with a leaky gas mask, a sticking barrel and without a penny in your pocket. What to do? Fix it yourself. A huge number of repair kits have been added to the game for all occasions and conditions. Perhaps even too much. The straps are divided into:
- wear percentage (10%, 15%, 20%, etc.)
- for what (armor, pistols, shotguns, rifles)
- how many times can be used (1, 2, 3 or 4)
Now mix it all. One-time for a pistol at 85% condition, two-time for a rifle at 75%, universal for all weapons, but for a lot of money. It’s difficult at first, but once you figure it out, most of it won’t be needed. A couple of oilers for your caliber, a couple of sewing kits and don’t neglect the condition of the equipment. Since everything is repaired to a very small percentage, loot is intended to improve the situation.
And by the way, repair kits do not need to be pumped out and are available immediately. No one has ever done this before.

Loot. Over 150 items of sundry items have been added to the game. Among them there is both useless garbage and items from which you can make a lot of money. Almost all things can be used in repairs (see picture below). Some can give boosts for the character (see next point). This is all in addition to the standard food, medicine, ammo and weapons that NPCs drop. Also, each item has a very detailed description. Sometimes even too detailed.

Application modules. If you remember, in the original Stalker, all that could be worn on the belt was art. Now the number of items has increased and changed. Firstly, the arts are now phonic and to carry them on the belt and receive boosts to the characteristics, an expensive container is required. Secondly, containers consume energy (see the next point). In addition to artefacts, you can now attach Kevlar plates to your belt to increase protection, steel mesh to increase the weight you can carry, a “camel hump” for stamina or a current limiter for resisting electrical anomalies. The list of items is far from complete. On the quick keys (F1, F2, F3, F4), in addition to first aid kits, bandages and steam packs, you can hang, for example, a dosimeter to determine the level of radiation or a quick-reset backpack system if you need to urgently run, and you are overloaded. In general, everything that can be used via RMB is bound.
Pay attention to the lower left corner. Above the health and stamina bars are icons for an installed Kevlar Plate, Steel Plate, and Titanium Mesh. The first two give armor, the last + 5kg of weight.

Charging system. All electronics now consume energy and the more they are cranked up, the faster the batteries run out. The PDA eats almost nothing, the headlamp is already larger, the night vision device will eat up a military unit during the game for an hour, and a top-end anomaly detector will last 30 minutes. Only a hand-held flashlight is eternal, but it takes the place of a detector and you can’t arm yourself with anything other than a pistol. All this is replenished with the help of a universal charger and batteries for it.

Well, now about the most delicious thing. Immersion. This is achieved with the help of various hoods, sounds and animations. But again, first things first.

HUD. Each helmet has its own "pattern" along the edges of the screen and 12 states of wear, from condensation beads to holes in the mask and scratches. All this is seasoned with the sound of breathing, by which you can determine how the GG lives - cheerful and cheerful, dragging 100 kg of rubbish or about to collapse. A future update will add raindrops on the glass. You can turn everything off if you wish.





Animations. Whatever GG does, it's all animated and voiced. Unfortunately, you won’t see the hands, but the sound is double. The rustle of dry rations and the subsequent crunch, the sound of a spoon hitting the bottom of canned food, the sound of electrical tape when repairing a suit, the sound of sewing, the sound of a can of lubrication, the sound of a first aid kit, the sound of putting on or taking off a gas mask/armor, the sound of putting art into a container or batteries into a charger. That is, so that you don’t click use, GG clearly uses it for its intended purpose. In addition, almost everything takes time (5-10 seconds) and in the heat of battle it will not be possible to repair the suit.

Armor, cartridges and silencers. Now everything is divided into classes.
The armor's description has expanded. In addition to standard resistance strips, a division has appeared into the protection of certain areas of the body and the class of this protection. From “absent” to “6”, where the latter is not penetrated by anything other than Gauss.
The cartridges had a level of damage specified for certain materials. Standard ones are average in everything, our main ammunition. Armor-piercing ones are good against body armor, while expansive ones are good for mutants. There are unique ones that, for example, give a double bonus to unprotected targets, but are completely useless against armor. It's basically a fraction.
Silencers are divided according to the level of noise emitted. For a large caliber the noise is suppressed poorly, for a medium caliber it is better, but those with exhaust pipes like Val or Vintorez are generally quieter than a knife. But there is also a negative effect - the muffler reduces speed and, as a result, damage.

Knives. Knives were divided into classes. Not every monster can be cut up by the weakest, but even the thick skin of a chimera is of no concern to the top ones. Knives tend to deteriorate from cutting carcasses and combat use. New ones are inexpensive, but sharpening sets are even cheaper.

Weapon. But this is the cornerstone of fashion. On the one hand, the authors made a cool system - now weapons have several levels of condition in addition to standard wear:
- old - the barrel will begin to jam earlier, has a scuffed texture
- regular - standard
- custom - has several pre-installed modifications, such as an enlarged magazine or +10% reliability
- modified - a muffler, collimator, optics, sight were integrated onto the barrel, painted in camo, or all of this at once.
But on the other hand, most of them are standard weapons of the Call of Pripyat, and these are hello left-handed Kalash rifles and NATO barrels with ejectors on the left. Plus the textures are not of the best quality. All this is a little annoying if you are a weapons nerd. If not, then there are no problems for you either. Craftsmen have already adapted their weapon packs (I am the one who uses them).

Hostages. If you wound an enemy, he may surrender and can be interrogated. the prisoner will give out either the location of the cache or the PDA at your request. Or maybe they’ll tell you to go to hell, it depends on your reputation. Don't try to interrogate fanatics. Why? Well, try it.

Reputation. The more quests you complete for your faction, the more loyal your faction members become to you. Merchants have a wider assortment, members of the group can be taken as partners, and hostages will hand over their swag faster. You can lower your reputation by failing quests or killing friendly NPCs.

Caches. In addition to standard backpacks and all sorts of pipes, boxes have been added to the list of loot items. And it’s really useful for fashion to break them down. First aid kits, cartridges, grenades - these are things you will never find there. Cowards, broken cartridges and shovels. Just kidding of course. It's random and anything can happen there. The armored vehicles generally lie on the bare floor.

Perks. The more we perform certain actions, the more famous and pumped we become. More partners can join us in the squad, hostages hand over more hiding places, and animals drop more loot.
