Despite the release of new iPhone models, the “old man” iPhone 5s remains extremely popular in Russia. Its affordability and easy-to-use form factor are complemented by a solid set of features, including LTE support. However, different iPhone 5s models support different LTE bands, which is something you need to keep in mind when purchasing a smartphone. A comparative analysis of iPhone 5s models and the technical capabilities of Russia's largest mobile operators will help solve the problem.

Two correct options

The iPhone 5S comes in four different models: A1533, A1453, A1457 and A1530 (it's easy to find out the model - you just need to look at the number on the back of the device). Models A1457 And A1530 support Band 7, which is most actively used by Russian operators. Thanks to this, there will be no problems connecting to 4G Internet on such iPhone 5s, regardless of the city and operator used. Of course, provided that you are in a place where your operator has 4G coverage. You can view a detailed map of 4G network coverage using the following links:

Two options to be careful with

Two other iPhone 5s models, A1453 and A1533, Band 7 is not supported. But they support Band 3 and Band 20, which Russian operators are increasingly mastering. The problem is that support for these bands is not implemented by operators in all regions with 4G coverage. Unfortunately, the ranges are not indicated on the coverage area maps presented above, which makes the process of determining the possibility of using LTE in a particular region problematic. What to do in each specific case?

The best solution is to call your mobile operator. Find out in what range LTE is distributed in your region. If the range turns out to be Band 3 or Band 20, then you shouldn’t worry when buying an iPhone 5s with model numbers A1453 and A1533 - it will catch 4G. A simple search on the Internet can also help to make sure. Enter the model number of your iPhone 5s, city and operator name in the search engine. With a high degree of probability, users have already found out about the availability of LTE support for this specific model and region. You can ask us, right in the comments.

As of 02/04/2014, it is known that Russian telecom operators are in full swing providing high-speed 4G or LTE Internet services. The speed of such a network can reach up to 100 Mb/s, which is significantly higher than the previous generation networks - 3G.

Possible LTE operating frequencies for Russian operators:

MEGAPHONE: 7/ 20/ 38 ;
.MTS: 7/ 20/ 38 ;
.BEELINE: 7/ 20 ;
.ROSTELECOM: 7/ 20 ;

We know information that the Antares group of companies is trying to obtain permission to use 4G networks in the 2100 MHz range, i.e. 1 . At the same time, some time ago Antares was denied the use of networks in the 1900 MHz range, i.e. 2 . There are rumors that Rostelecom is also trying to obtain permission to use 1 or 2 bands. This information is not reliable, but is for informational purposes only.

To understand PCT models once and for all, we have collected the differences for all current iPhones in one place.

PCT devices are products officially imported into Russia that have Rostest certificates

This means that all declared functions of the device will work in the country, and the device will be covered by the manufacturer’s official warranty.

So-called “gray” devices, which are imported from Europe or the USA, can either work fully or be unsuitable for some services. There may be problems with the warranty of such devices.

Before buying an iPhone in person, in an online store or in a specialized place where equipment is sold, you should always check the model of the device.

How to find out the iPhone model and country of origin

The model number is printed on the back cover of the device and on the box. Of course, the codes must match. Sellers usually do not hide this information.

To find out where a specific device model comes from, you should look at the box or find the data in the device itself along the way “Settings – General – About this device”. Information about the country is carried by the last two Latin letters in your model code.

It will be more difficult with the country. Usually this information is not advertised when selling. You can most often view the iPhone region directly upon receipt of the device.

Once you have decided on the origin of the model, you can understand the distinctive features of the device.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

In addition to these models, you can find models from Japan (A1779 and A1785). They do not turn off the shutter sound in the standard Camera application; they have a FeliCa module for payments and transfers via Apple Pay. Such models may not work correctly with domestic payment terminals.

There are other minor differences for models from certain countries or regions, more on that.

Models A1660 and A1661 have a faster LTE module. Under ideal conditions, the difference in speed can be up to 30%.

Models A1778 and A1784 officially serviced in Russia. There will definitely be no problems with them when contacting a service center.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

Models certified for sale in the Russian Federation have the following codes: A1688 and A1687. Other models A1633, A1700 A1634, A1699 are intended for sales in the USA and Asian countries.

There are some differences in the supported frequencies, however, they are not that critical. There is no real difference in mobile Internet speed; all models will work with domestic operators.

The only difference is the official guarantee on the territory of the Russian Federation. Models A1688 and A1687 will be serviced under warranty at any authorized service center, but repair or replacement of other models may be refused.

iPhone SE

When purchasing this model, you need maximum attention. It's all about the supported LTE bands. Almost all domestic and many European operators operate on frequencies that are not supported by the American model.

For iPhone SE model A1662 LTE will work only with some operators and not in all regions of the country. To avoid problems with LTE in Russia, choose models A1723 and A1724.

The situation with warranty service has not been canceled.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

PCT models have codes: A1586 and A1524. The following devices can be found on sale: A1549, A1589, A1522, A1593.

The situation is similar to the iPhone SE. Models A1549 and A1522 do not support operation in LTE Band 38; MTS and Megafon operators operate on this frequency. Such devices will only be able to access the network via 3G or they will have to change their operator.

iPhone 5s

Here is the widest variety of models. PCT devices have a code A1457, there are also these: A1453, A1518, A1528, A1530, A1533.

iPhone 5s A1533- This is a CDMA device. If you don’t know what it’s needed for, avoid this iPhone.

A1530– a universal model with support for all possible frequencies. It will support LTE for all Russian operators and will work with 4G networks almost anywhere in the world.

A1528– a device intended for sale in China. The GSM device has a simplified module and does not work with 4G LTE at all.

A1518– another Asian model. Of the frequencies we need, only Band 38 is available. Some operators will have problems with LTE.

A1453 Of the LTE frequencies we are interested in, only Band 20 is supported, which means there may be problems with high-speed connections in most regions for almost all operators.

Briefly about why you should buy the Apple iPhone 5S A1457. You can take this model under warranty to an official Apple service center in Russia, and if it is a manufacturing defect, you will be given a new one. This particular model has the ability to connect to the fourth generation Internet network in Russia, the so-called 4G (LTE network), on any telecom operator. Frequency ranges Model A1457 - Bands 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20

Why can you buy an iPhone 5S A1530, but is it still better than the A1457?

Apple iPhone 5S A1530, this model is intended for Asian countries, which means that 4G in Russian networks will only be supported on Beeline. The remaining networks in Russia have not yet expanded their equipment to have a large spectrum of frequencies. You will be able to provide warranty service at an official service center only in Asian countries. Warranty repairs are provided only by the store. In this case, you will have to send it to a service center in Hong Kong. You'll have to wait about a month. If you live most of the time in Asian countries, we recommend purchasing this model. Frequency ranges Model A1530 - FDD-LTE Bands 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20; TD-LTE Bands 38, 39, 40.

Why shouldn't you buy the iPhone 5S A1533?

Apple iPhone 5S A1533 is intended for America. This means that warranty service from an authorized service center is provided only in the United States. That is, if your gadget for some reason stopped working and your warranty period has not expired, but you purchased it in Russia, then most likely the store will send the smartphone to America. The repair period in this case will be about two months. If you live in America, then this model will suit you quite well; it will support 4G, only in the USA. Frequency ranges Model A1533 - Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25.

Why should you buy iPhone 5S A1453?

Apple iPhone 5S A1453 This model is designed for Sprint networks in the United States. Again, warranty repairs at an official service center in the USA. LTE (4G) networks only on the Sprint network in US cities. You need to understand that if you often have to be in the USA, then the A1453 phone model will suit you. Frequency ranges Model A1453 - Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26

You should not buy cheap products, you need to buy profitable things. If you buy a model that is not serviced in Russia, it will cost you nerves, time, money, and problems. It's the same with any product.
